Capture by Rachel Van Dyken

Losing your ability to speak at the age of seventeen; it’s not normal or fair.
But trauma, has a way of throwing normality out the window.

Dani lives anything but a normal life.
Her sister is married to one of the biggest names in Hollywood.
Her best friends are rockstar duo AD2.
And she has more love around her than most people experience in a lifetime.
But that doesn't change the fact their parents are dead.
Or that it's her fault.

It seems her new normal is being a mute, living on the inside, unable to actually communicate on the outside.
That is until Hollywood’s newest heartthrob Lincoln Greene hires her as his assistant for the summer.
He's gorgeous, completely unavailable, and unobtainable.
But that doesn't stop her from wondering...if things were different...would he want her?
If she was whole, would he be the other half?

EXCERPT

“You kiss my wife and enjoy it, I remove your balls in your sleep.” Jaymeson said in a chipper voice as he slapped me on the back.
“Always great working with a real professional, Jaymeson, always great,” I muttered.
“Here’s a tip,” Jaymeson whispered in a low voice so Pris couldn’t hear us. “Get it done on the first take so I don’t have to cause an on-set accident where I set your trailer on fire and blame it on God smiting you for being a Hollywood heathen.”
“Heathen?” I repeated with a smirk. “Isn’t that the part I’m playing? I thought Demetri was hot for Nat, so doesn’t that mean I need to be hot for your wife? Your very…” I glanced at Pris. “…lovely wife?”
“Bastard. I should never have cast you!”
I burst out laughing. “Jay, you know I’m messing with you. I’m professional. That’s why you cast me, because in a sea of Hollywood heathens, I’m the only one who wouldn’t make a pass at your wife.”
He shrugged. “True. Also you may be passable in the whole looks department, or so I’ve been told by numerous people on set.”
“Jealous?”
“Hardly.” He rolled his eyes. “I’m Jamie Jaymeson. Women tattoo my name on their asses and ask me to sign their boobs.”
“You signed whose boobs?” Pris asked, sneaking up on our conversation.
“My grandma’s,” I blurted. “She’s such—” I wrapped an arm around Jaymeson and squeezed. “—a  huge fan.”
“Right.” Jaymeson coughed. “It’s always such a thrill, signing elderly ladies tits. Hey, you think I should do a nursing home tour?”

“Yeah, man.” I nodded. “Dream big.”

BHB Front cover
Henry -
My past is gruesome and unforgettable no matter how hard I try to let go.
Writing is my escape. My only therapy.
When I met my wife, had children, and my career sky-rocketed, I thought I’d never revisit those dark days again.
So, the moment Blue Hill, Maine beckons for me, I go willingly in an effort to write the next big story.
But when a ghost from my past shows up, all of my carefully rebuilt walls come crumbling down hard and fast. My only way of defense is ripped from my grasp as this distraction bounces into my life.
Will I be able to sift through what’s fiction to find reality?

Eli -
I’m a serial killer. A victim of narcissism and the need to satisfy my own urges. I have a thirst to snuff out the lives of those that remind me of her—the woman that ruined me—and I take great pleasure in quenching that thirst.
I have no rules. No parameters. I do as I please.
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Henry McElroy, is my god. His sick, twisted mind constructs the world to which I rule. I would be nothing without him—my dark creator.

***
What happens when Henry McElroy’s story begins to take a realistic form the moment he sets foot in the sleepy, seaside town in Maine? As soon as he begins sharing excerpts of his book with his fans on social media, including an obsessive one he meets in Blue Hill, bodies begin to stack up in similar fashion to that of which he writes about. Will the blame be placed on the town’s newest and most twisted visitor? Or will Henry be able to prove his innocence and clear his name before it’s too late?

I was done. Finished. Out. For the past seven years, I belonged to a division of the government that wasn’t on the books. I operated alone. There was a mission: I either failed or succeeded. If I failed, that meant I was dead. After all the shit I’d seen, done, caused—I survived. It was a fucking miracle. I was the best at what I did, but there were times I saw my life flash before my eyes. But when you’re the government’s covert assassin, what else was there to expect. If I was captured, I didn’t exist. If I died, I didn’t exist. If I succeeded, I was assigned my next mission. The plane wheels screeched as I touched down in Alaska. Finally, I was where I wanted to be. At times, I wasn’t sure I knew who I was anymore. My identity was erased from the system long ago. For the last three months, I’d been working on getting released from the program. It was a slow process with how deep I was in with Black Division. Those suits knew I wouldn’t share anything I’d done. Hell, half the time I wanted to forget. After three months of debriefing, the government let me out. Of course, there was an underlying threat. If we so much as suspect you’ve betrayed this country, consider yourself dead, Mr. Bradley. Yeah, nothing else was new. I wasn’t an idiot. I knew I’d be monitored for years to come, but they wouldn’t find anything.

Excerpt

With everyone thinking I was angry, I was taking a wild guess that it would be at least thirty minutes before anyone realized I was gone. That was a good head start. From the vague vibe I was feeling from Jess and the other traitors, I was looking at covering a distance of about four miles. I ran that nearly every morning, and the time it took to get there would allow my wolf and me time to figure out what we were going to do when we got there.

Cutting the bitch was what my wolf wanted to do, and I couldn't honestly say that I wasn't on board with that plan, but I was smart enough to know that I couldn't take on eight werewolves on my own. I would have to find their hideout and come back with my pack. Bringing Phoenix and his clan to watch my back in case any of my wolves were really on Jessica's side was a smart thing to do, so I would let them come, too, not that I would really get a choice in the matter; I doubted he would stay behind even if I begged him to.

A loud clatter had my head whipping around to look behind me again. An aluminum trash can lay on its side, its contents spilling into the street. A tabby cat peeked around the edge of the torn trash bag and I exhaled in relief. I was a sad case, indeed. I laughed at myself. I was not used to being the monster.

"I aim to change that, Mena."

I rolled my eyes at my wolf. "You just be you and let me be me and we'll get along just fine."

Soft laughter filled my head and I had to smile. I had to admit that I liked her, regardless of how much trouble she was causing me with Phoenix. At least we had come to a compromise. I didn't know how well said compromise was going to work out, or even if it would at all, but I was willing to try. Everyone deserved a shot at happiness, even with as insane as our case may be.

As I turned my head back around to continue on my journey, I ran smack-dab into the hard chest of a man. He was in shadow, so I couldn't see his face. Stumbling back, I attempted to get my balance, but his arms closed tightly around my body, jerking me to him and trapping my arms down at my sides so I couldn't move.

Struggling against his solid hold on me, I opened my mouth to let out a scream, but he twisted me around and clamped a hand over my mouth so fast that I didn't know what was happening until I was being pulled backward, away from the security of the streetlights that lined the suburban road.

I raised my knee up then brought my foot down hard on the toe of his shoe. He let out a muffled grunt, but continued to drag me into the shadows.

This had to be one of the werewolves. The strength alone told me that. They had to have been watching my house, just waiting for me to leave. This bastard was going to kill me if I didn't do something.

My wolf stirred under my skin. She wanted out and it was the first time since I'd been bitten that I agreed with that plan. With only a little more than human strength and quick reflexes, it wasn't possible for me to handle a grown male werewolf on my own.

My final option, before letting my wolf free, was try to at least injure him. I hoped that would be enough to make him loosen his grip on me enough so I could run. If he gave chase, I would have to concede and let my wolf take over.

Gripping the dagger tighter in my palm, I rotated my wrist and drove the blade into his side as hard as I could. An ear-piercing ululation erupted from his throat and he let go of me. I didn't wait or look back. I ran as fast as my legs would carry me, adrenaline and my wolf giving me the speed and strength to push my muscles past what a human would be able to endure.

"Mena… Mena!" I heard the cry behind me, but my mind wasn't registering anything except panic and the need to get as far away from my attacker as possible. "Mena—wait! It's me…" A strangled groan had me slowing. "…it's… it's Phoenix. I—I'm so sorry, Mena."

I froze, not wanting to look back at the man, terrified that what he'd spoken was true. If it was—if I turned and saw those ice-blue eyes staring back at me, it would destroy any trust I had ever had in him.

"Please, Mena, I never meant to hurt you. I was only trying to scare you so you would realize what a stupid stunt going off on your own to find the killers was. What were you thinking?"

The blood rushed through my veins at an impossible speed, and fury washed over me in waves as I stood there trying to decide whether to walk away or allow my wolf to rip Phoenix's head off. She was all for the second option.

I heard him cough, and then groan in agony. I imagined he was pulling the dagger out of whatever organ I had been lucky enough to hit. There was a lot of heavy, ragged breathing and two more guttural-sounding coughs. It appeared as though I had hit a lung. Too bad it wasn't his heart! I wasn't sure stabbing him in the heart with a silver blade would kill him, but I would have put money on a bet that it would have been a hell of a lot more painful.

I turned my head to glare at him, but the hatred I had expected to feel wasn't there. He had fallen to his knees, and his head was bent, his eyes focused on the bright red stain spreading across his new shirt.

Shaking my head, I looked up to the sky and asked, "Why me?" After receiving no answer, I sighed and began the one-hundred-meter walk back to Phoenix.

We stand in silence as I try to gauge Edward's reaction, his jaw is clenched but other than that he's unreadable. I look to Andy, who has his head lowered. Like me, he's waiting to see how Edward takes this revelation. You know that moment when you can see everything happening in slow motion but you're still powerless to stop it? That's exactly what happens as Edward lifts his foot and it connects with Andy's temple.
"Edward, no!" I scream as I watch Andy's body slump to the floor. I rush over to find him breathing but unconscious. "Why did you do that?"
"He's a fucking liar," Edward spits.
"How do you know?" I ask incredulously.
"This isn't Andrew. This timid and vulnerable person is not my brother," he replies.
"We need to step outside, now!" I assert.
We make our way to the front of the warehouse. "Carl, I need you to check on Andy and stay with him please," I ask my bodyguard, as Edward mumbles something to Peter who gets straight on the phone.
We are outside and Edward is pacing and muttering to himself under his breath. He stops and punches the wall beside me and I flinch.
"I'm sorry," he says wide eyed, seeing the sudden terror in my eyes. He reaches his arms out to me to pull me to him, but I step back.
"It was Andy's blood you had all over you yesterday, wasn't it?" I ask. He stops pacing but stays silent. "Answer me!" I demand.
"Yes," he says simply as if he owned up to stealing the last biscuit.
"Why did you lie to me?" I ask and Edward looks confused. "Why didn't you tell me you knew where Andy was?"
"After what he did to you-"
"Exactly, after what he did to me. So why are you the one beating the hell out of him?"
"I was..." He pauses to think for a moment and takes a deep breath. "I don't know."
"Yes, you do, but as usual you're in denial," I goad him.
"No, I'm not."
"Do you not see how wrong this is? You have your brother naked and captive in an abandoned warehouse and you're beating him to a pulp. He's just revealed a deep secret he's kept for years and the first thing you do is kick him in the head." I try to rationalise with him.
"What do you want me to do? He is the reason I'm like this and to sit in there and lie… He isn't even trying to take responsibility for what he did. He only made it worse when he helped Grant take you away from me."
"What did you hear in there? All he did was own up to what he had done," I say losing my patience with him. We are interrupted when a car pulls up and Edward's other brother, Matthew, gets out.
"He was making excuses. He's a liar, he is very close to our father and worships the ground he walks on," Edward says and then turns to Matthew. "Thanks for coming."
"It's good to see you Dana, I'm happy to see you're safe," Matthew says to me before addressing his brother. "What can I do?"
Edward starts to tell Matthew about the conversation we just had with Andrew, I watch for the younger brother's reaction but there's nothing.
"Are you seriously okay with this?" My voice comes out slightly more raised than I wanted it to be.
"Obviously everyone is a little upset at the moment. Can I talk to you on your own?" Matthew pulls me to the side, away from Edward. "I learned a long time ago to stay out of Edward and Andrew's disagreements-"
"You're just going to allow this to happen? You're not even going to hear Andrew out?" I ask him frantically.
"I think I am, but I don't know about Edward," he answers.
"Can you convince him? If you're willing to listen to what Andrew has to say he might listen too," I plead. He rolls his eyes and huffs before we walk back to Edward.
"I think we should see what our dear brother has to say."
"Why?" Edward's voice is laced with aggression.
"At the dinner while we were eating, Dad was really laying into Andrew. Dad had pulled him to the side and I watched the altercation. I couldn't hear what was being said but Andrew's face looked terrified. After that he sat back down next to James and started snapping at people. When dinner was finished he headed straight into the room you were in and within five minutes you were knocking him out," Matthew finishes.
"So what, I'm supposed to just forgive him and welcome him with open arms?" Edward replies sarcastically.
"No one would ever expect that but we could hear what he has to say. What's the worst that could happen?"
Edward's shoulders slump in defeat and I let out a long breath that I didn't realise I was holding. I take Edward's hand and silently lead him back inside.
